Strathroy Rockets organize successful Event of Back 2 Back Hockey
Dec 11, 2012, 11:16 am

parade

On November 24th the Strathroy Rockets Junior B Hockey team and the Bluewater Hawks Female Intermediate AA Hockey team did something that had never been done in their town with the two great programs that are forever producing great Hockey Players within both the Male and Female games. Last seasons Rockets were the GOJHL Western Conference Finalist While the Bluewater Hawks won the PWHL Championship as well as the Provincial Womens Championship. The Rockets have produced NHLer’s such as Andy McDonald, Brian Campbell, Jeff Carter and Dale Hunter. Bluewater has produced players such as Megan Agusta of the Female Canadian National Team and Olympic Gold Medalist and Under 18 National Team World Championship Gold Medalists such as Rebecca Kohler and Cayley Mercer as well as multiple players who have gone on to successful Division I, Division III and CIS Hockey careers.

The two teams Joined together for the first time making it a Back 2 Back day on the Streets of Strathroy as well as A Black N Black night at WMMC the home of the Rockets.                                                             During the after noon as the snow lightly fell bringing the Christmas Spirit the two teams participated in the annual Santa Claus Parade with the Bluewater team leading the way giving out Candy and promoting Female Hockey, and the forever popular Rockets handing out Rockets Candy and over 500 free tickets to the two Hockey games planned for the evening. When the parade completed both teams went their separate ways to different Residence’s in Strathroy for pre-game Pot luck meals prepared by Parents and executive members of each team. Later that evening the two teams joined again at WMMC to play Back to Back games with both teams wearing their Black game jerseys. The Rockets took to the Ice first at 5:00pm facing the St.Marys Lincolns in front of 785 fans. All fans in attendance were encouraged to later stay for the Bluewater Hawks game which got under way at 7:30pm. 275 fans stayed to take in the female hockey action with many of them enthused with the high level of play the girls demonstrated. Danny Gibson who organized the event is the Rockets General Manager and Director of Hockey and his daughter Brooke is a goalie with Bluewater. When Gibson the only Strathroy resident on the Bluewater team was introduced as the starting goalie for the girls game she received cheers as loud as any throughout the two games. Many fans were pleasantly surprised when they arrived at WMMC to find that former Maple Leaf Doug Gilmour was in attendance to evaluate three players his OHL Kingston Frontenac’s had drafted. Bluewater also has an NHL touch as former London Knight Standouts and NHLer’s Tim Taylors daughter Britt is the Captain of Bluewater and Brian Dobbin’s daughter is a blue liner and assistant captain with the Hawks. Off the ice a 60 item silent auction featuring Wayne Gretzky and Jonathan Toews jerseys was also a big hit. The evening proved to be successful for both teams as the fans witmessed the Rockets record a 4-0 shutout win and the Hawks record a 2-1 win in front of the best fans in the game. The shut out sent Rockets goalie Dalen Kuchmey into the record books as he has now recorded the most single season shutouts in Strathroy’s Franchise history. For Bluewater it helped heighten the awareness of how good the female game is and exposed them to some potential new fans. As well for the Rockets it gave them as chance to once again show that they are willing to do what ever is posed upon them in the community and showing the town why this great organization continues to be so successful on and off the ice. The intention is to make this an annual event so in 2013 Back 2 Back will be Back in Black.
